The History of Weddings: Colors, Traditions and Superstitions

White or a variant of white was always a favourite, symbolizing the girl's innocence and her soon-to-be-changing status. However, it was not a color used for many purposes and was not always a favorite choice. The blue associated with the Virgin Mary is another pure

White Dresses

An old poem tells us the following about the color of wedding dresses and how these colors can affect the future of the bride: “The one who marries in white chooses the right one. If he's in the grays, he'll go far. Whoever gets married in black will want to go back to the past. The one who gets married in red will wish he were dead. Those who marry in blue will be faithful. İnci awaits what's inside, a bustling life. She is ashamed of being seen in green, her husband in yellow. Whoever gets married in brown will live outside the city. The one in pink will be out of fun.” Wedding dress has always shown originality according to cultures and social development. Along with initiation ceremonies (such as Baptism, Muslim vows at birth, Jewish birthdays, etc.), attestation and burial, marriage is one of the three major public events in a person's life, and the only one in which one can be fully satisfied and proud of being at the centre. This is the bride's big day rather than the groom's. Throughout history, women have tried to make their wedding dresses special so that they are suitable for the celebration, and thus beautiful brides become more beautiful, while those who are not very beautiful, at least when they look at them, are made to be said to be magnificent. With the arrival of department stores at the beginning of the twentieth century, almost every woman became able to fulfill her dream of getting married in a “new” wedding dress. White wedding dresses began to gain popularity. In 1890, Ladies Home Journal wrote: “Brides' dresses have been white from time immemorial”. This was not true, but it showed how accepted it was that the wedding dress should always be white. Some brides, especially non-upper class brides, wore dresses that were more practical and could be worn after the wedding. Queen Victoria was the first to push the button by marrying in white. Prosperity after the war allowed grand Victorian-inspired wedding dresses to become a reality. Grace Kelly's marriage to the Prince of Monaco became widely known thanks to their one-of-a-kind fairy tale wedding. In 1956, in front of 30 million television viewers, Grace Kelly's marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco was referred to as the wedding of the century. The wedding dress consisted of a white stand-up collar, fitted bodice with long sleeves, and a undulating skirt made of twenty-five yards of silk taffeta, one hundred yards of silk, peau de soie, tulle, and Brussels rose needle lace. She wore a bridal cap decorated with small pearls and orange flowers, and a veil of 90 yards of tulle. As with Queen Victoria's wedding before her, Princess Grace's wedding would set the tone for the next decade, and large white dresses would be in vogue. Royal princesses have always tried to be literally princesses on their wedding day. In medieval times, palace weddings were of great political importance, and in order to raise the prestige of the young bride's country, she had to look magnificent and the groom had to impress his country with the evident prosperity of his nation, if possible more than they could afford. In this context, they would use whatever material they could, most of them costly. For example, fabrics sewn with gold and silver thread, velvet, damask silk, satin and fur. Also dress; it was sewn with precious jewels such as diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls, and in this way the bride would sparkle and sparkle even in the sunlight. Of course, many brides were not princesses and could not afford such huge expenses. However, in order to look special, a bride would often try to copy the dress of a woman from her upper social class. At that time, the wedding dress for the common girl was cut sparingly, so a wedding dress with flowing sleeves and a tail was a major status symbol. But in modern times, wedding dresses with factory-made materials have lost their status symbol, but wedding dresses with tails have become a tradition. A-skirt wedding dresses, which have become the most classical form of wedding dress, were seen for the first time at the end of the eighteenth century. With the production of fabric weaving machines, cheap muslin fabrics exported from India and the influence of the classical trend that influenced the world, veil and white wedding dresses became indispensable for weddings in the 1800s. As usual, the fashion started in London, from there it spread to other cities and towns and then to the surrounding countries. In the nineteenth century; Even a bride who wore a white fluffy wedding dress on her wedding was expected to wear her wedding dress again. As a newly married lady, the bride had to wear her wedding dress again during the "bridal visits", where she met with her family, friends and acquaintances. Brides of the upper class, on the other hand, had their wedding gowns turned into a bodice evening bustier (often used as two separate pieces) after the wedding and re-adorned them for other events. Queen Victoria removed the lace from her own wedding dress and reused it many times. She even wore her wedding dress with black silk fabric on her wedding anniversary 50 years later. Until the 1920s, wedding dresses were always made around certain styles and rules. If there was a little more embellishment than usual, it was considered a little more modest than the most daring fashion. However, in this decade, women's clothing has been revolutionized. The skirt length increased from the foot level to below the knee. In the process that followed, the dressing style at weddings also changed. Brides preferred wedding dresses that showed ankle lengths, but as the skirt lengths got shorter, this style of wedding dress was not considered appropriate by the church, and for this reason, most brides chose wedding dresses with long skirts. Following the fashion of the season in wedding dresses and the transformation of long wedding dresses with tails into two-piece models took place in the twentieth century. Towards the middle of the century, the wedding dress profile began to change seriously with the influence of Mary Quant and her team in the 'Swing Sixties' period in bridal fashion.
